Annual Report TASC 2023
17 September 2024
We are thrilled to present TASC’s Annual Report for 2023, a comprehensive reflection of our work and progress over the past year in our mission to promote greater equality, democracy, and social justice across Ireland. This report underscores our ongoing commitment to addressing critical societal issues through research, public education, and strategic partnerships, while outlining our key achievements and future aspirations.
Key Highlights of 2023:
Expansion of the People’s Transition: We successfully entered Phase II of our People’s Transition project, which now spans multiple communities across Ireland, including Roscommon, Mountbellew, and Enniscorthy. This initiative empowers local communities to lead the way in climate action and social justice, ensuring that vulnerable populations are not left behind in the transition to a greener economy. The continued expansion of this project marks a significant step towards community-driven, sustainable development that aligns with our vision for a fair and inclusive future.
Focus on Health Inequality and Social Inclusion: This year saw a deepened commitment to tackling health inequalities through collaborative research and partnerships. Our evaluation of the North East Inner City (NEIC) Healthy Communities Programme, in collaboration with the Dublin City Community Co-operative, provided valuable insights into how health interventions can effectively address social determinants of health. Additionally, our work on the Assessment of Health Needs of Migrants funded by the Irish Cancer Society sheds light on the healthcare challenges faced by marginalized groups in accessing critical services. This focus on health underscores TASC’s belief that social justice and equity must permeate every aspect of society, including healthcare.
Influential Research and Policy Contributions: In 2023, TASC published a wide array of reports addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time. Our signature annual inequality report, The State We Are In 2023, provided a detailed analysis of income inequality, poverty, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis in Ireland. Additionally, our work on EU fiscal rules and mental health policies in partnership with the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) contributed to important conversations at the European level, influencing both national and EU policy debates.
Collaborative Efforts Across Sectors: We have continued to expand our partnerships across the public, private, and community sectors. Notable collaborations in 2023 included working with Aviva and the Irish Banking Culture Board (IBCB) on our Financial Resilience Training programme, which delivered essential financial literacy and resilience training to hundreds of individuals and frontline workers across Ireland. Our ability to engage a diverse range of stakeholders is critical in advancing solutions that are both inclusive and impactful.
Commitment to Public Education: One of TASC’s central objectives is to bridge the gap between research and public understanding. Through our People’s Transition project and Financial Resilience Training, we not only produce cutting-edge research but also provide communities with the tools they need to implement progressive changes in their local contexts. In 2023, we launched numerous public education projects, focusing on climate justice, financial empowerment, and democratic participation, ensuring that individuals and communities are equipped to navigate the complex challenges of today’s world.
This report not only outlines our key achievements over the past year but also serves as a roadmap for the future. As we enter the second year of our Strategic Priorities 2022-2027, TASC remains dedicated to expanding our research capacity, fostering stronger partnerships, and advocating for progressive policy changes that address the interconnected crises of inequality, climate change, and public health.
Looking Ahead:
We find ourselves at a pivotal moment, where the challenges of social inequality, climate change, and economic injustice are more intertwined than ever. Yet, with these challenges come opportunities. TASC will continue to build on the momentum generated in 2023, deepening our engagement with policymakers, civil society organisations, and communities to create a more equitable and sustainable Ireland.
As we reflect on the year’s successes, we are profoundly grateful to our supporters, donors, partners, and dedicated staff who have made this journey possible. Their commitment has allowed us to push the boundaries of what is achievable and continue our work as an independent voice for social change.
