Carndonagh Community Envisions a Sustainable Future Through People’s Transition Project

As part of the Carndonagh People’s Transition project, TASC Climate Justice researcher Deirdre Carolan engaged people across the community on how they would like to see Carndonagh in 2050. Visual artist Becky Hatchett then put this information into an illustration that depicted the key themes raised by people in the area. This vision was presented back to the community at an action-planning workshop in Carndonagh on the 4th of March, alongside an overview of the consultation data.
Using this vision of the future of Carndonagh, workshop participants collectively identified priorities for the area. The need to support sustainable, local food production was a key issue that emerged. Participants designed a plan that included the development of multiple local edible sites, community polytunnels, foraging and increasing the value of food production from local farmers.
The importance of more locally based education and employment opportunities was another priority. Actions that emerged from this included the need to increase sustainable education and green apprenticeships in Inishowen. This involved harnessing nature based and regenerative solutions locally and increasing linkages with regional third level institutes.
These collaboratively designed actions will form part of the solutions phase of the People Transition for Carndonagh.
